Homework reinforces class work through practice and extension. It provides students with the opportunity to display responsible behavior and to extend the conditions by which they learn. Through homework, students learn how to manage their time. They also learn the importance of setting goals and the steps necessary to achieve them.

Homework also plays an important role by involving the parents in the education of their child(ren). To successfully educate children, parents and teachers must work together. Homework is one-way parents can make a meaningful contribution to helping their child(ren) succeed.

Listed is minimum as well as maximum time guidelines for homework for which parents should plan. All students in grades K-8th will be assigned homework four nights a week, Monday through Thursday.

Homework Hotline:
A Homework Hotline is available in English and Spanish to all students Monday through Thursday between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The Homework Hotline number is 602-246-5000.

Homework Study Times: District Policy (IKB) recommends the following study times per day:

  • 1st grade:          20 minutes

  • 2nd grade:         20 minutes

  • 3rd grade:         25 minutes

  • 4th grade:         30 minutes

  • 5th grade:         45 minutes

  • 6th grade:         50 minutes

  • 7th/8th grade:    60 – 90 minutes
